It's been long since I watched a musical film for the last time, and it was The Sound of Music (1966). Sweet and quite inspirative if I may recall.

Chicago is a very good one. With good casts, like Renée Zellweger and Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Richard Gere. All of them sing and dance in this movie. No wonder Catherine won the Best Supporting Actress oscar after her clever portrayal of a glamorous yet energetic vaudeville star who, on the other side, is a criminal. Aside from that, this film also won 5 other oscars, including Best Picture.

The story, while providing an opportunity for some juicy songs and sharply funny characters, is more than just an eye candy. Its portrayal of cynical manipulation of the criminal justice system by creating a celebrity-hungry media circus is more than apt today. But if there's any moralizing going on here, it's with a wink and a flash of leg.

The year before, there was another musical cinema piece, Moulin Rogue! (2001). This movie bagged 2 oscars. I think I'm gonna seek out the DVD, while my musical desire is still burning.
