It was written by David Gates, a member of the band. The song first appeared on Bread's 1970 album "On the Waters." Released as a single in June of 1970, it would become the group's first top ten and only number one single on the Billboard Pop Singles chart. It also was certified gold by the RIAA for sales of over one million copies.
The song is quite touching actually. It reflects the experience of a fresh new love and the hope for togetherness. The lyrics are all about a guy who believed that someone could really help him make it in life. As long as they both put faith in it, life would be a wonderful thing.
Well, in this case, I don't think love is exaggerated.
